PeRL

The Process engaged to Rewire Leadership (PeRL) gives you a model and tools to harvest your inner leadership pearls. Gems of the sea, pearls begin as irritants that oysters cover to protect themselves from a perceived attack. Like the oyster, we have gems within us that we cover and hide in attempts to protect ourselves.

Over time, the PeRL guides you in a gentle but profound manner to discover hidden aspects of yourself. We employ methodologies from a variety of perspectives including psychology, neuroscience, creative arts, education, systems theory, change management, and resilience dynamics to help you learn to utilize these discovered or recovered inner gems.

Through the PeRL, you will develop lifelong tools that apply to all aspects of your life—yourself, at work, as a leader, a team member, and with your friends and family.

Each month, we'll take another step of the journey together.

Setting yourself up for success is primary after deciding that you want to change in some way, to learn or develop a new skill, attitude, or behavior. In this preparatory phase, you also learn how to address impediments so that you can engage in your own learning process without ambivalence.

We help you learn how to learn from your past by adopting an inquisitive mindset and opening to self-discovery. As John Dewey wrote, “…the live creature adopts its past; it can make friends with even its stupidities, ….[and] uses past successes to inform the present.” Learning how to learn from your past, understand yourself, and use the lessons learned constructively are powerful characteristics of an authentic leader.

The Paradox of Acceptance

The Key to Change

Start where you are rather than where you think you should be. When self-compassion replaces self-criticism, true acceptance replaces resignation.

Now that you have developed greater awareness and understanding of how you became who you are now, acceptance is the next step. Recognizing the role your brain plays in creating survival strategies is key to opening up the gates of self-compassion that shift resignation to acceptance.

Power of Appreciation

Really digging who you are (even the unpolished gems)

The old paradigm of using self-criticism to increase performance is dead. Appreciation changes the brain and grows your sense of self, leading to increased productivity, creativity, freedom, and fun.

Acceptance is important but really, truly, being able to appreciate all the various aspects of yourself is the real gateway to freedom and authenticity. We give you an approach to expand your sense of self and have fun doing it. There’s nothing to get rid of and everything to gain.

Learn a four-step model that turns your dreams about yourself and your team into reality and lets your inner leader flourish.

It’s great to appreciate yourself, especially since the alternative doesn’t feel so good. But now what? How do you take this awareness and appreciation and make it practical? We walk you through creating a vision of the change you want, articulating what the importance is for you, supporting you to develop a plan, and helping you to create practices that make your dream a reality.

Self-Correction Model

Using seeming mistakes as opportunities to learn

Learn how to stay on your path even though you make mistakes. Shifting from criticizing yourself to critiquing yourself is a primary tenet of the learning mindset. As you learn the self-correction model, you realize how much fun learning and change can become. Errors become wonderful learning opportunities and you can have great laughs. An added bonus here is that you’ll learn how to truly measure your progress.

Rather than simply collecting experiences, integration allows you to learn the lessons once and for all.

Instead of racing on to the next thing, we’ll provide you with integration skills that help you digest your experience and make it a part of you. True learning only happens when you make something your own. Then you can master it, use it, and innovate from it. The state of flow comes when your new skill, attitude, or behavior has been fully integrated and you think of it as part of who you are.

Perl9

Celebrate

It's more important than you think.

Celebration helps you consolidate and savor what you did and completes the rewiring process, solidifying change in the architecture of your brain.

With the wisdom gained from your journey, we help you take the time to appreciate what you did to get yourself to where you are now. Your attention, intention, and commitment made each step possible. By acknowledging and celebrating the small steps, you actually move yourself forward more readily—into greater peace, fulfillment, and the release of your potential. As a leader, the more value you place on integration and celebration for yourself, the more you are able to bring this to your team.

You've Arrived

The journey continues

Yes, you can celebrate that you have indeed created a new neural network.

However, without the fear of life and death, that new neural network doesn’t get hard wired instantly and so, is still very tenuous. It is like a newly bushwhacked trail that has been used just enough to become a deer trail. With practice and positive self-correction, it will become a wider path and then a one lane road. Soon, with more practice, your new neural network will become a two lane road and even a small highway. Will it ever become as strong as the superhighways in our brains that are our knee jerk reactions? Brain researchers are not sure but regardless, the stronger the new neural network, the faster and easier it is to get back on track and feel, think, and behave in ways that serve you. As you become facile at the PeRL, your professional and personal journey becomes more and more enjoyable and successful.
