Because our brains work by association, the use of metaphor is particularly effective in connecting an experience with sensations. Given that change is frightening or at least unpleasant for so many of us, it is helpful to prepare the way for change by linking positive associations.
Flowers inspire me and remind me of change, growth, and possibilities. Aware of that, my office staff surprised me with a birthday gift of three canvas prints of photographs I had taken of tulips while in Amsterdam. I look at these frequently since they are directly above my computer monitor.
Each time I look at them, I feel nurtured by their beauty, I feel gratitude for the people who gave me the prints, and I am inspired to further my own potential.
I've just posted the second practice using metaphors for positive change in the monthly topics practices section. Check it out.
