Here is an amazing bit of information: At least 11 million bits of information are entering our brain via our senses each second. Our conscious mind, however, seems to be able to process only 50 bits of information per second. The vast majority of what enters our brain or goes on inside our brain is happening outside of our awareness.
The good news: Though we are conscious of only a tiny fraction of the bits of information that our brain takes in moment to moment, we can determine what bits of information we focus on.
Unconsciously, we focus our mind on what is most important to us. Consciously, we can decide where to put our attention.
Practically speaking, we can utilize practices that help us focus on that which we want to cultivate in ourselves. The awareness practices for the remainder of this month focus on gratitude, credit taking, giving, and receiving.
Remembering that for survival's sake, our brain is hardwired to focus on the negative (called negativity bias), it is beneficial to guide our mind to focus on the positive if we want to cultivate this sweet side of life.
